President Trump has thrown the world trade system a major wobbly with his new and promised tariffs. How are World Trade Organisation (WTO) members responding to the turmoil? What options exist for economies that support the rules-based trade system to sandbag, if not strengthen, the WTO institution that has supported trade growth since the end of WWII?
ACITI is pleased to host a discussion with Australia's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO, Mr James Baxter.
James will provide an update on what is going on in Geneva, Australia's approach, and outline the implications of current developments for the WTO.
James is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently First Assistant Secretary, Office of Global Trade Negotiations. He has previously served overseas as Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Permanent Mission to the WTO in Geneva and in Belgium and Japan. Mr Baxter holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Sydney.
