Australia’sInternational Trade Policy

Free TradeAgreements have been the principal tool Australia has used to progress its international trade interests since 2000. This course provides participants with an understanding of the evolution of Australia’s FTA policy and approach to FTA negotiations. This includes changes in the rationale for launching FTA negotiations and different negotiating strategies. The course then explores the major characteristics of Australia’s FTAs compared to trade agreements negotiated by other economies, and the basic structure of Australia’s FTAs.Participants then discuss the numerous arguments and reviews of the impact and effectiveness of Australia’s FTAs in delivering both commercial and geopolitical outcomes. The course concludes with a discussion on current challenges to Australia’s existing suite of FTAs and prospects for reviewing current FTAs and negotiating new FTAs.
