Jessica Giovanelli

Non-Executive Director

Jessica is one of Australia’s leading experts in international and Australian trade and investment law and policy, dispute settlement, and treaty negotiations.

 Jessica's career spans the full breadth of institutions shaping international trade law, from the World Trade Organization (WTO) to government to private practice. She has worked at the Office of International Law in the Attorney-General's Department, the WTO Rules Division in Geneva, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and as Special Counsel at a top-tier boutique firm. She is currently on leave from legal practice where her negotiation and dispute settlement skills are tested daily by two small children.

 Jessica brings deep trade law expertise to the ACITI Board. She has extensive experience in a wide range of trade and investment-related law and policy. She is a recognized authority on subsidies and anti-dumping rules. She also works on environmental and safety regulations that affect trade, including new issues in climate and energy. She has specific expertise in legal issues and barriers affecting trade in services, the trade rules involving the movement of natural persons, and international intellectual property law.

She has advised governments, firms, and the WTO on complex trade and investment issues across many industries. Her work covers aviation, agribusiness, and the mining and resources sectors. She is well-versed in the legal implications of government involvement in manufacturing supply chains. She also has experience advising on sanctions and modern slavery laws.

Jessica is fluent in French and has lived, worked and studied in Canberra, Paris, New York, Dili, London, and Geneva.

 Jessica holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Bachelor of Laws, with Honours, from the Australian National University, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from ANU, a Diplôme (mention bien) from the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), and a Master in Law (with Merit) from the London School of Economics.
